Baba Yaga, the hideous witch of Russian mythology, but nothing could be further from the truth as these two enchanting young women cast their spell over our audience. Karen and Gwen captivated us with their intriguing take on Mussorgsky’s Pictures – a virtuoso performance! Just close your eyes and think of the Great Gate

I can honestly say the Baba Yaga duo did us proud during a great concert. The enthusiasm with which they fulfilled their duties at school workshops excelled, if possible, even further.
They both communicated so personally with the audience and with the school pupils that they will be remembered well after the close of our season. I will be happy to recommend they are taken back some time, without hesitation.

It may have been a cold, damp winter evening outside, but inside Inverness Town House the warmth of the sound and playing of Karen Dufour and Gwen Sinclair enthralled the audience.  The pairing of a saxophone and a concert harp may be an unusual combination but Karen and Gwen produced some beautiful musical colours and a fresh look at a repertoire of much-loved and lesser known works.  Gustav Bumcke’s Notturno was charming; the arrangement of Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei saw the piece in a new light; Debussy’s Arabesque aroused reminiscences of the cult recording from the early 1970s by the Japanese electronic virtuoso, Tomita.  But it was in the second half that the Inverness audience enjoyed the highlight of the evening  –  the ladies’ own arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.  The skill and imagination to present such a varied work on sax and harp produced something special.

The keenly anticipated visit of Baba Yaga – saxophone and harp  was a new combination for most – was an immediate hit with the audience. The interaction between the players of such differing instruments was compelling listening and watching, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was a delight.
